Harkness Tables

The Harkness method, as any GA alum knows, is a critical component to humanities teaching in the Upper School. These custom made tables encourage students to express their opinions, foster their own voice and participate equally with instructors and peers in class discussion.

Information/Recycling Centers

Strategically situated throughout the Upper and Middle School complex, these centers represent an important connection between technology and sustainability.  Flat screen monitors, featuring the day’s most updated student and faculty communications – from club meetings to game cancellations and other impromptu school alerts - couple with designated recycling recepticals to promote sustainable practices within our entire school community.

The new building design has afforded the doubling of student accessed computer space. As technology becomes more and more prominent, this strategically placed Computer Station in the Upper School has become the go-to location to the students.

Our new main entrance has proven to be a hub of activity during a typical school day.  Thoughtfully landscaped spaces feature small brick walkways leading to seating areas that serve daily as a prime spot to wait for a ride, catch up on some reading or to share a break with a friend.

Wingspan Display, The Preserve

Integrated amidst the budding flora and roaming fauna, you can see how your own wingspan (arm length) matches up with various species of avian life. The Wingspan Display is but one interactive component of The Preserve, and serves as the main welcome sign for the east entrance to the area.

House Alcoves

Each of the students in GA’s Upper School is a member of one of seven houses, named for some of the school’s most influential figures through our long history. The House Alcoves provide a daily hub for house activities such as morning meetings or for the students to gather during a break. Each space is easily identified by the distinct colored flag of the house marking its entrance.

Cross Country Trail

Runners will wind along the Wissahickon Creek, through Sisters’ Woods and up through the wooded northern boundary of campus, when running the newly designed trail which maintains portions of its traditional route while traversing some newly appointed features.

Natural Turf Athletic Fields

Even the youngest of  Patriots thrive on these new fields, wisely situated on the campuses’ highest plateau and constructed with sophisticated water management systems just below each playing surface. These fields support multiple activities, from physical education classes to interscholastic competition during the fall and spring to the time-honored tradition of Field Day.

The Terrace

Situated just outside of the Honickman Auditorium and Middle School Commons, The Terrace provides a unique outdoor respite in the shadow of our famed Fairbanks bust of George Washington. With café tables and chairs, The Terrace will be a popular spot for small gatherings and quiet lunches.

Baseball Field

Situated neatly on its own picturesque plateau in the outdoor athletic complex, the relocated varsity baseball field provides the Patriots program with a first class baseball facility. Complete with home and guest dugouts, bullpens, with the beauty of The Preserve just beyond the outfield wall, the baseball field presents itself as a featured facility.

Just beyond the doors of an Upper School hallway is a special location in the new building design. The Green Roof, which is partially covered with vegetation growing over a waterproofing membrane, offers the ability to retain and utilize rainwater and contribute to the overall insulation of the building. The Green Roof is symbolic of GA’s renewed commitment to environmental sustainability, while also providing an enriching educational opportunity.

Located in the ground floor of Upper School this specially designed room expanded space for our growing musical program. Featuring strategic soundproofing, rehearsal risers and instrument storage space, this room provides conveniently accessed prep space for musicians and instructors.

In an idyllic wooded corner on the northern boundary of campus, the new softball field provides the Patriots with a state of the art softball facility. Every feature, from the skinned infield to the dugouts and practice areas, meets varsity competition specifics and highlights this picturesque location on campus.

Arboretum, The Preserve

GA’s vast natural acreage provides a treasured asset many similar schools can only dream of having. Of the many components of The Preserve, the Arboretum specifically allows our school to focus on a place where trees are identified and cultivated for scientific and educational purposes.

Constructed taking into account the feedback and specifics of the GA Parents' Committee, The Parents’ Room plays an integral role in our community. The room is at once a diverse workspace, meeting space, storage space and creative headquarters for our active parent leadership organization.

Administration Building

The lasting icon of our heritage harkening back to 1759, the Administration building is a replica of the original stone schoolhouse in Germantown. Newly renovated but staying true to its 18thCentury roots, the building houses the administrative operations of the school to include office suites for the Head of School, Admission, Human Resources and Business, as well as The Farwell Room; headquarters for our Chinese language and culture program.

Athletic Field Complex

 

Strategically reconfigured to maximize use of our athletic acreage, the new Athletic Field Complex provides top-quality outdoor facilities commensurate to our successful programs.
