Alumni Spotlight: Green Roof Enthusiast Lauren Mandel ’01 Publishes Book
Posted June 11, 2013
Germantown Academy alumna Lauren Mandel ’01 recently released her new book, “Eat Up: The Inside Scoop on Rooftop Agriculture" (New Society Publishers, 2013). As a Project Manager and Rooftop Agriculture Specialist for Roofmeadow, a green roof firm based in Mt. Airy, Mandel is an expert on the rising popularity of rooftop gardens and farms.
Mandel’s book, “explores the practices and practicality of rooftop gardening through case studies, interviews, and checklists relating to three scales of production: home rooftop gardening, commercial rooftop farming, and the rooftop agriculture industry."
Mandel started the book four years ago while completing her master’s degree in landscape architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. She first became interested in the subject while reading an article in The New York Times. Since then, the demand for rooftop gardens has risen throughout America’s cities.
“Rooftop agriculture is hot right now,” Mandel told the Chestnut Hill Local. “Green roofs are important for aesthetics, but rooftop agriculture is also important for human health.”
Mandel is a 2005 Skidmore College graduate where she earned a bachelor’s degree in environmental science. She was part of the design team for GA's redesign while working as a landscape designer for Wallace Roberts & Todd (WRT). She launched her book on April 25 at Good Karma Cafe in Philadelphia, along with a Roof-to-Table Photography Exhibition featuring photos from 'EAT UP.' The show will hang until June 30 and will then travel to Chicago to coincide with a Midwest book launch on August 20.
