A Look at the Past: GA Salutes its history on Flag Raising Day
Posted September 12, 2012
Germantown Academy began its 253rd school year on a majestic morning as students and faculty from all three divisions congregated in the Quad under a cloudless sky to enjoy the annual Flag Raising Ceremony.
Head of School Jim Connor 1760, who is beginning his 22nd year in that position, used this year’s ceremony to highlight GA’s rich history. Student, faculty and staff members spoke of many facets of GA’s past, most notably the symbolization of the Belfry, the role of GA during the Revolutionary War, the origin of the school’s red, black and blue flag, the Miracle of Fort Washington and the beginning of coeducation.
“With the flags raised, the songs sung and the bell rung, the 2012-2013 school year is officially begun,” Mr. Connor said. “Thank you all! May this school year begin well and conclude as your best ever.”
