To China and Back!

As part of the Beijing City scholarship program, four students and two faculty members were generously hosted by GA’s Confucius Classroom partner school, the High School Attached to Capital Normal University, in Beijing for 12 days in July.
Representing GA in China were Carson Metzker ’15, Hunter Kessell '15, Tyler Thurlow '14, Acara Carter '13, Harvie Ruggles, Curriculum Partnership Program Director, and Sue Negro, Upper School Math Teacher.
Students and teachers began their adventure in China by attending the opening ceremony of the Beijing City scholarship program at Tsinghua University.
“We were so excited when our school name was on the big screen in front of more than 1,000 students from all over the world,” Mrs. Negro said.
While in Beijing, the group attended several classes, and in the language class, they learned how to bargain in Chinese. They later practiced their bartering skills in the always bustling Pearl Market.
GA’s group also visited major sites in Beijing, including the National Museum of China and the 798 Art Zone, and took a trip to Xian, the capital of the Shaanxi province and one of the most important cities in Chinese history, to see the world famous Terracotta Warriors.
“We were amazed by the ancient architecture we saw while in Xian as well as the cultural differences between the bustling capital and heart of the Chinese civilization,” Mrs. Negro said. “One of our tour guides described Xian as the root of the Chinese culture, Beijing as the trunk and Shanghai as the branches. When we return to China we will be sure to make Shanghai one of our priorities.”
Students and teachers also had a chance to visit the Great Wall of China.
