There is no shortage of giving to those less fortunate by the students of Germantown Academy. What may have begun formally in 1986 when Peter McVeigh 1760 became the Director of Community Service in the Upper School, CSO at GA was a time honored tradition for years prior. Today, every student in every grade participates in some level of community service - all voluntary - and the pleasure it derives is intensely personal.
Therefore it is only fitting to celebrate CSO during GA's 250th. The good work of students and faculty has not gone unnoticed by its recipients. The students give of themselves in so many different ways, including gift giving at the all-school Holiday program, spending time at the Ambler Senior Center on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, participating in dress down days for Alex's Lemonade and, most recently, Haiti relief, serving meals at St. John's Hospice, selling pretzels for the SPCA, inviting speakers to the annual Awareness Week to coincide with the Upper School's year-long topic, holding the Thanksgiving Food Drive and much, much more.
A special thanks goes to Jocelyn Hillman, Chair of the CSO Showcase, and Mary Jane Lettner for putting together the beautiful CSO displays around the school.
