To many fans of Germantown Academy athletics, the mention of Rachel Balzer '19 may bring back memories of a lethal three-point shooter draining timely shots from well behind the arc. Those spectators will now have the chance to watch Balzer again, this time on the sidelines as a member of Longwood University's women's basketball coaching staff.

Unlike its last contest against the Academy of Notre Dame, Germantown Academy's girls lacrosse team was in control the entire way. Nursing an 11-5 halftime lead, the Patriots held on to top the Irish for the second time this season, 13-11. 

On April 23, GA hosted the Blue Devils in their second meeting of the season, but with the same result as the red, black, and blue captured a 5-2 victory.

Both teams were strong on the bump on Tuesday, April 23, but Germantown Academy defeated Inter-Ac League rival William Penn Charter, 2-0.

At Germantown Academy, there has been a constant, reliable figure in an important game-day role for many years. Bill Shaughnessy has been at the scorer’s table, manning the scoreboard since the 1980’s. He also helps run the clock for boys lacrosse and has even dipped his toe into coaching.

Germantown Academy was back in action on the road on Monday, taking on Westtown School where the Patriots took down the Moose, 26-4. The game ended in the fifth inning due to the run rule.

Germantown Academy continued it's spring track season with their lone home meet of the season. The Patriots welcomed The Haverford School, Malvern Prep, Penn Charter, Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, and The Agnes Irwin School. 

Germantown Academy's crew team continued their 2024 spring season at the Fifth Manny Flick on Sunday, April 21. The Patriots had eight entries compete in the regatta, the most they have had all season.

Lucia Smigiel '24 scored five goals and Gigi Ippoldo '24 had three as Germantown Academy defeated Academy of Notre Dame, 10-7, to earn its first Inter-Ac League win. 

Germantown Academy's crew team continued their 2024 spring season at the Fourth Manny Flick on Sunday, April 14. The Patriots had three entries compete in the regatta.

A six-run second inning fueled Germantown Academy's softball team over Baldwin School on April 16, giving the Patriots their first Inter-Ac League win of the season, 7-5.

The girls defeated Episcopal, 71-60, but fell to PC, 85-55. Meanwhile, the boys defeated EA, 73-63, but fell to Haverford, 75-66.

With numerous practices being held indoors due to poor weather, it would not have been surprising if the reigning Inter-Ac League champions showed some rust in their first contest of the year. However, that was not the case as the Patriots toppled Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, 5-2.

After a few weekends off the water, Germantown Academy's crew team continued their 2024 spring season at the Third Manny Flick on Sunday, April 7. The Patriots had 5 entries in the competition, the most representation that they have had during the young season. 

Germantown Academy traveled to their second meet of the season on April 4, competing at The John Heins Invitational at Upper Moreland High School. Over 30 schools were at the meet. There were no team scores for the meet.

Despite the less than ideal conditions, the Patriots earned a gutsy 12-11 win in overtime to level their record at 1-1.

Germantown Academy opened the spring track season with an away competition against The Hill School and Perkiomen School at Hill on March 27. While the meet was not scored, the Patriots put up some great performances. 

Blake Smith lined up to make the second start of his Northwestern career, and his first start at home, against Iowa on March 2. Two weeks before, the Germantown Academy graduate wasn’t in the lineup at all. But as injuries wreaked havoc on Northwestern’s roster, opportunity knocked for Smith, and he took it

Sarah Zimmerman’s fourth season as the Head Coach of Germantown Academy's softball team started in March 2024. Zimmerman, who serves as the Middle School Academic Dean and science teacher, gave some insight into why she coaches the sport.

Germantown Academy was well-represented on the lists, with 26 student-athletes being recognized, two of whom were named the Most Valuable Player for their respective sport. In addition, the Independence Hockey League announced their All-League teams as well, with five student-athletes making the list.
