To many fans of Germantown Academy athletics, the mention of Rachel Balzer '19 may bring back memories of a lethal three-point shooter draining timely shots from well behind the arc. Those spectators will now have the chance to watch Balzer again, this time on the sidelines as a member of Longwood University's women's basketball coaching staff.

Unlike its last contest against the Academy of Notre Dame, Germantown Academy's girls lacrosse team was in control the entire way. Nursing an 11-5 halftime lead, the Patriots held on to top the Irish for the second time this season, 13-11.

At Germantown Academy, there has been a constant, reliable figure in an important game-day role for many years. Bill Shaughnessy has been at the scorer’s table, manning the scoreboard since the 1980’s. He also helps run the clock for boys lacrosse and has even dipped his toe into coaching.

A six-run second inning fueled Germantown Academy's softball team over Baldwin School on April 16, giving the Patriots their first Inter-Ac League win of the season, 7-5.
The girls defeated Episcopal, 71-60, but fell to PC, 85-55. Meanwhile, the boys defeated EA, 73-63, but fell to Haverford, 75-66.
With numerous practices being held indoors due to poor weather, it would not have been surprising if the reigning Inter-Ac League champions showed some rust in their first contest of the year. However, that was not the case as the Patriots toppled Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, 5-2.
After a few weekends off the water, Germantown Academy's crew team continued their 2024 spring season at the Third Manny Flick on Sunday, April 7. The Patriots had 5 entries in the competition, the most representation that they have had during the young season.
Germantown Academy traveled to their second meet of the season on April 4, competing at The John Heins Invitational at Upper Moreland High School. Over 30 schools were at the meet. There were no team scores for the meet.
Despite the less than ideal conditions, the Patriots earned a gutsy 12-11 win in overtime to level their record at 1-1.

Sarah Zimmerman’s fourth season as the Head Coach of Germantown Academy's softball team started in March 2024. Zimmerman, who serves as the Middle School Academic Dean and science teacher, gave some insight into why she coaches the sport.
Germantown Academy was well-represented on the lists, with 26 student-athletes being recognized, two of whom were named the Most Valuable Player for their respective sport. In addition, the Independence Hockey League announced their All-League teams as well, with five student-athletes making the list.
