GA Chinese Testing Center News Report

Germantown Academy's Chinese Testing Center held a Youth Chinese Test (YCT) on Nov 13, 2011.  Eight GA students (Sophia Chen was not in the picture) took various levels of  written and speaking tests. They all passed the exam, and received certificates issued by Hanban.  This was the second time GA Chinese Testing Center hosted a Chinese proficiency test.  However, on the October 23, 2011 test, the majority of students came from other schools. The November 13 test included all GA students.

Chinese Affair Director Susan Xuan and Chinese Language Teacher Wendy Chen were very pleased that GA students performed well in the YCT/HSK tests.  They encourage more students to sign up for future tests.

Nowadays, more and more students are becoming interested in learning the Chinese language causing Chinese tests to become more and more popular. The Youth Chinese Test (YCT) was launched by Hanban in an effort to encourage young foreign students to learn Chinese and improve their Chinese language proficiency.

Since Chinese tests include some differences in its format and structure compared to what our students are accustomed to, we would like to review these differences with our students.  Germantown Academy’s Chinese Testing Center held a YCT introduction session on November 6. We invited Ms. Xueling Qu, Chairperson of the Modern Language Department and a Chinese Language Teacher at Philadelphia High School for Girls, to teach the class. The students that attended said it was informative and will help them on the YCT.

Chinese Language Teacher Wendy Chen expressed that she would also encourage her students to take the YCT test in the future.

We had 10 GA students that took the YCT test on November 13 and two GA students who will take HSK test on December 4. We wish them luck on their tests!

GA's Nancy Cui 2015 received high results from her HSK level IV test on October 23. Congratulations! Nancy is also a Chinese tutor in the Upper School.

October 23 HSK test and Hanban scholarship winner

On October 23, Germantown Academy held the first Hanban's Chinese Prefecition Test (HSK). A total of 15 students took the test. They came from Germantown Academy, Philadelphia High School for girls, Hill School, Villanova University and Bryn Mawr college and one test taker came from Ohio!

Our testing center started in the second part of this year in our new building. So far, we have candidates coming from local six local high schools and three colleges. One of our test taker, Andrew Haas, a student of Villanova University, upon the recommendation of Germantown Academy's Confucious Classroom, won the Hanban scholarship and will go to the Beijing Language University to study the Chinese language and culture for four weeks. Villanova University awarded the whole trip to Haas.
