Boy's Water Polo: Patriots edge Haverford in Overtime

By: Joe Cicchino - Sports Information Assistant

FORT WASHINGTON -- When Germantown Academy and The Haverford School boy's water polo teams met in the pool on Friday, 28 minutes of play just was not enough. After four quarters of play and 15 goals apiece, the Patriots outscored the Fords, 2-1, in overtime to secure a 17-16 win.

"It was incredible," head coach Michael Koziol said. "We saw two really high level teams play one heck of a game."

Haverford opened the scoring 40 seconds into the overtime period.

Ten seconds later, sophomore Walker Butler '20 (assisted by Brian Bartle '19), evened things up between the two teams. On the next Haverford possession, senior goalie Henry Grady '18, came up with a huge save to keep GA ahead.

The game-winning goal was scored by senior Finn Lillis '18 (unassisted) with 50 seconds left in the first half of overtime.

"I think towards the end our team , in front of our fans and where we train and grind everyday just wanted it more," Koziol said. "We just really played as a team. It was pretty cool to see."

While no goals were scored in the second half of extra time, it was not for lack of effort. In fact, it was effort that prevented any points.

Junior goalie Justin Stokes '19 made a save on point-blank shot by Haverford with one minute left, and then another with only 38 seconds remaining.

"Both of our goalies played outstanding," Koziol said. "It was a great game. I can't think of anyone that stood out as not playing one of the best games I've seen them play."

The win puts the Patriots at 9-5 on the year (2-1 in Inter-Ac play).
