The Academy Club was founded by the members of the Class of
1924 to create, in the words of the founders, a "closer relationship
between the Alumni body of Germantown Academy and the school itself."
This spirit of dedication and involvement is commemorated each year when GA and
the Senior Class honor certain class members for contributing to the life of
the school by inducting them to The Academy Club.
The Academy Club maintains a special relationship with GA.
A fundamental, traditional activity is awarding the Geis Trophy to the
outstanding football player in the annual GA-PC Day football game.
Another recent project was to collect, restore, and preserve school
memorabilia. In 2006, then Academy Club president Gump Whiteside oversaw the
creation of the Academy Club wall in the Common Room. In 2009, Gump Whiteside passed on the presidential reigns to
Lauren Quaile ’97.
The number of members
selected each year varies with the size of the class. Traditionally, the total
is 10 to 15. Beginning with the class of 2008, slight changes were made to the
selection process. In order to be considered for the Academy Club, at the
end of their junior year, members of the class are asked to nominate themselves
or their classmates. The class then votes on all nominees and the results
are announced on Prize Day in June. The club's annual dinner, honoring and inducting
its class of 2010 members, will be held on June 8, 2010.
In addition to the
seniors inducted each year, there are times when other alumni/ae have been
elected in recognition of their dedication to Germantown Academy. Written
nominations should be sent to the Alumni Office by May 15 of each year.
