Germantown Academy offers
students a wide range of opportunities in the Performing Arts. Students interested in choral music
participate in the Singing Patriots, while students with a pronounced
interest and talent in voice may audition to join Singing Patriots Select. For students who play a string
instrument we offer the Academy String Orchestra as well as the honors-level
Select Strings. The Academy Symphonic
Band (and its Honors counterpart) offers students an opportunity to play from
the standard wind ensemble and band repertoire. This group frequently combines with the String Orchestra for
larger community events. Our Jazz
Ensemble, consisting of interested students from all of the other ensembles, is
an extracurricular group that meets before school in order to expand our
musical offerings and allow as many students as possible to participate. All of our music groups frequently
perform in local venues, and our choral program undertakes an international
tour every other year.
The theater component of
Performing Arts includes annual courses in acting, improvisation, musical
theater, theater production, and technical theater. All courses in sophomore through senior years may be taken
at the regular or honors level.
Our Audition and Performance course provides students with a serious
interest in pursuing theater at the college-level a chance to prepare
thoroughly for this rigorous process.
Naturally the vast majority of students taking theater classes perform
or participate in one or more of our Belfry Club productions, which include
musicals, comedies, and dramas offered as extracurricular activities. Recently, the Belfry Club was cited by Philadelphia Magazine as the best high
school theater program in the Philadelphia area.
Germantown Academy is also a leader in regional
community music. The Germantown
Academy Chorale and Chamber Society offer the most talented students, faculty,
and area musicians an opportunity to come together at GA to create and perform
music of the highest standard.
