Janet Maurer, Ph.D., Director of Counseling Services

Dr. Maurer began working at GA in 1998 as a part-time consulting psychologist and became Director of Counseling Services in 1999. A licensed and certified school psychologist, she earned a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. She has experience working in a wide variety of clinical settings including colleges, middle school, residential treatment and psychiatric hospital facilities, and private practice. Dr. Maurer coordinates all counseling services at GA and maintains an office in the Upper School, working with students, parents, faculty, and staff. She also offers peer counseling training in the Upper School.

Angela Jones,  Ph.D., Lower School Psychologist

The Lower School welcomed Dr. Angela Jones as its new psychologist in the fall of 2008. Dr. Jones comes to GA from the Albert Einstein Medical Center where she was a psychologist in neonatology and developmental pediatrics.  Her school background comes from the Delaware County Intermediate Unit, where she served as a school psychologist in Delaware County for three years, and Washington Township (NJ) High School as the psychologist for the emotional support program. She currently sits on the faculty at Immaculata University, serving as an adjunct professor in clinical and school psychology.  Dr. Jones earned her Bachelor’s degree from James Madison and her M.Ed. and Ph.D. from Temple University.

Andrea Kurtz, Psy.D., Middle School Psychologist

Dr. Kurtz joined the counseling staff in 1999. She is a licensed psychologist and earned her doctoral degree in clinical psychology from Long Island University. Dr. Kurtz provides counseling, consultation, and psycho-educational programming to all members of the Middle School community. She offers peer counseling training, a leadership seminar, 6th grade seminars, and 7th grade issues as well. Dr. Kurtz has also had professional experience working in residential treatment and private practice.

 

Dave Samson, M.A., Upper School Counselor

Mr. Samson joined the counseling staff in 2004.  He earned a Masters degree in counseling psychology from Lesley University. In addition to offering counseling and consultation to all members of the Upper School community, Mr. Samson is an Upper School House Head, teaches in the freshman seminar program, teaches 9th grade English, and coaches boys lacrosse. He also has experience counseling in both college and hospital settings.
 

Jim Wade, CMT, Upper School Counselor

Mr. Wade, a certified music therapist, joined the counseling staff in the fall of 2004 after serving for four years as a part-time accompanist for several GA musical productions. In addition to his continued participation with the Singing Patriots and Belfry, Mr. Wade provides counseling and consultation in the Upper School, teaches in the freshman seminar program and the Middle School's 6th Grade Transitions Program, and teaches yoga to students and faculty. He has had extensive experience as a counselor working in the community mental health system. He is also an accomplished musician who teaches and performs locally.
